Dr. Nadia Ismail – was hängt an Ihrer Wand?

 

Bei mir hängt so einiges an der Wand bzw. steht verteilt in der Wohnung rum. Kunst ist für mich Lebenselixier und ein so selbstverständlicher Teil meines Lebens, dass ich mir nur schwer vorstellen kann, ohne Kunst zu leben.

 

An der Wand hängt unter anderem mein erstes gekauftes Kunstwerk von Lenz Geerk, das ich mir mit viel Extraarbeit kurz nach meinem Studium zusammengespart habe. Der Künstler hat zu dieser Zeit selbst noch studiert.

 

Was verbinden Sie mit den Kunstwerken?

 

Kunst hat neben dem ästhetischen Genuss und diskursiven Potential vor allem einen emotionalen Wert für mich. Unabhängig davon, wie sich ein*e Künstler*in entwickelt hat oder entwickeln wird, bedeutet mir jede Arbeit auch etwas auf der emotionalen Ebene.

 

So steht dort auch eine kleine Zeichnung der US-amerikanischen Künstlerin Anna Gaskell, die ich erst kürzlich erworben habe. Über diese Künstlerin habe ich viele Jahre gearbeitet und geforscht, sie 2018 gewissermaßen als meine ‚Antrittsausstellung‘ in der Kunsthalle präsentiert. Nach wie vor verfolge ich ihre Arbeit.

 

Ein Werk, das mich zurzeit jedes Mal ganz besonders erfreut, wenn ich es betrachte, ist eine Fotografie der Künstlerin Sophia Süßmilch.

 

Sophia Süßmilchs Arbeiten sind auf die Essenz verdichtet. Humorvoll, mitunter an der Grenze zum Sarkasmus bringen ihre figurativen Malereien, Fotografien und Performances die Dinge mit viel nackter Haut auf den Punkt. Dabei scheut sie inhaltlich keine Grenze. Gender, Feminismus, Religion und der Ursprung der Welt sind selbstverständlicher Teil ihrer Gedankenwelt. Hinter den bunten Oberflächen verbergen sich intelligente und nachdenkliche Töne, die gesellschaftliche Prozesse scharfsinnig aufgreifen und mit visueller Wucht den Betrachter*innen zurückspielen.

Dr. Ismail – what's hanging on your wall?

 

I have a lot hanging on the walls as well as objects placed all around the flat. For me, art is a life elixir and such a natural part of my life that I can't imagine living without it.

 

Among other things, I have an artwork by Lenz Geerk hanging on the wall. It was the first artwork I ever bought, and I had to do a lot of extra work just after I graduated from university to save up for it. The artist was still studying himself at the time.

 

What do you associate with the artworks?

 

Aside from its aesthetic pleasure and discursive potential, art holds an emotional value for me. Regardless of how an artist has developed or will develop, every work also means something to me on an emotional level.

 

For instance, I have a small drawing by the American artist Anna Gaskell that I acquired quite recently. I have worked on and researched this artist for many years, I presented her work as my 'inaugural' exhibition at the Kunsthalle in 2018, and continue to follow her work today.

 

At the moment, a work which particularly brings me joy every time I look at it is a photograph by the artist Sophia Süßmilch.

 

Sophia Süßmilch's works are condensed to their essence. Humorous, sometimes bordering on sarcasm, her figurative paintings, photographs and performances feature a lot of bare skin, and get to the core of things. At the same time, she doesn't shy away from any boundaries in terms of the content. Gender, feminism, religion and the world's origins are a natural part of her intellectual world. There are thoughtful and intelligent tones behind the colourful surfaces, which astutely pick up on social processes and play them back to the viewers with visual force.
