EXBODIMENT #3
Liveperformances by
Rocío Boliver (MEX) + Tokio Maruyama (JAP)

30 August 2022, 7 pm

Rocío Boliver, also known as La Congelada de Uva, (*1956, Mexico City, Mexico) lives and works worldwide. Since 1992, her performances formulate a sharp critique of the oppression of women. In physically challenging performances, she confronts those present with topics invoking sexuality, excretion, pain, age, and sickness. By examing her body in an existential way, she renders visible stereotypical beliefs in society.

Tokio Maruyama (*1956, Tokyo, Japan) lives and works in Tokyo. Since 1979, his performances are based on field work in urban environments. Drawing on global material excesses, he investigates the relation between nature, human beings, and the artificial. His performance (‘install-actions‘) are characterized by a fragile state between sustainment and collapse. In this balance, Maruyama locates the human body and a civilization threatened by disappearance.

Kunsthalle Gießen goes Unterer Hardthof

Due to renovation work at the Kunsthalle Giessen, the performative interventions will be held at the former brewery “Unterer Hardthof”.
EXBODIMENT is a collaboration with BLACK KIT | DIE SCHWARZE LADE. Founded in 1981, this vibrant archive for international performance art is intended as a source of inspiration for the present. It contains approx. 4,000 dossiers on performance, theatre and sound artists, 10,000 specialist publications, videos and photos in various formats, relics of performances and many metres of shelf space devoted to networks across different continents.
As a result of the Kunsthalle’s collaboration with the Cologne-based archive, all performances will be held in two cities. In addition to the dates in Giessen, performances by the invited artists can also be seen at the Kulturbunker in Cologne-Mülheim.
