EXBODIMENT #4
Liveperformances by
Kurt Johannessen (NOR) + Sinéad O‘Donnell (N-IRE)

27 September 2022, 7 pm

Kurt Johannessen (*1960 in Bergen, Norway) lives and works in Norway. For the artist, whose work takes on a minimalist approach, the presence of an atmospheric situation is the basis of his practice. In quiet, concentrated works that often deal with existential topics, he explores the relationship between body and landscape, repetition and variance, permanence and ephemerality. He often exposes his body to the elements and condenses the relation of humans and nature into microscopic images.

Sinéad O‘Donnell (*1975, Dublin, Ireland) lives and works in Belfast. Her practice is contexual and she has made works across the globe, integrating her learning of various cultures with personal experience. Sinead uses her body to create works that reference the challenging experiences that women face across the world: Her aim is to give a voice to those that have been silenced. Previous works have addressed: violence; grief; being neuro-diverse in a neuro-typical world; inclusion; and exclusion.

Kunsthalle Gießen goes Unterer Hardthof

Due to renovation work at the Kunsthalle Giessen, the performative interventions will be held at the former brewery “Unterer Hardthof”.
EXBODIMENT is a collaboration with BLACK KIT | DIE SCHWARZE LADE. Founded in 1981, this vibrant archive for international performance art is intended as a source of inspiration for the present. It contains approx. 4,000 dossiers on performance, theatre and sound artists, 10,000 specialist publications, videos and photos in various formats, relics of performances and many metres of shelf space devoted to networks across different continents.
As a result of the Kunsthalle’s collaboration with the Cologne-based archive, all performances will be held in two cities. In addition to the dates in Giessen, performances by the invited artists can also be seen at the Kulturbunker in Cologne-Mülheim.
